Cannabis and the Family
People want help making sense of the information about cannabis now that Pennsylvania is one of the 37 states and the District of Columbia that offers medical cannabis. Nineteen states (including New Jersey) and the District of Columbia also have legal adult-use cannabis , and so our relationship with cannabis is changing that can have important impact on ourselves as individuals and as parents.
When parents are faced with occasional, experimental use, or use that has become more regular to the point of being problematic, what should a parent say (or not) when discussing cannabis with their teen? I recognize that there are unique paths to well-being and recovery and so I collaborate with prescribing medical cannabis physicians to coordinate the care of people who may benefit from medical cannabis.
Pennsylvania has responded proactively to problems associated with opioid use by recognizing the effectiveness of medical cannabis for opioid use disorder, recognizing it as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis.The state is acknowledging the research showing that the concept of “gateway drug” is a myth and there is now substantial evidence that it can be an “exit drug” for opioid use disorder.
I am a member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians and have a Pennsylvania Department of Heath Training Certification in Medical Cannabis.
